Terry Shoup and Webb Marner to be Named Honorary Members at the Honors AssemblyTerry Shoup ASME Past President Terry E. Shoup, Ph.D., and former Board of Governors member Webb Marner, Ph.D., will both be recognized by the Society with Honorary Membership next month at the 2015 Honors Assembly in Houston, Texas. Dr. Shoup and Dr. Marner are among nine engineering professionals ASME will pay tribute to during the ceremony, which will be held Nov. 16 during the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE).First awarded in 1880, the founding year of the Society, Honorary Membership recognizes a lifetime of service to engineering or related fields.Shoup, a prof of mechanical engineering at Santa Clara University (SCU), is being recognized with for his distinctive career contributions as a researcher and educator, and through service to the engineering profession as exemplified by leadership positions in various engineering societies. Shoup, who joined SCU as dean of engineering in 1989, has been a champion of engineering education for more than 45 years, having previously served as a teacher, a researcher and an administrative leader at Rutgers University, the University of Houston, Texas AM University, and Florida Atlantic University. An innovator in the field of machine konzeption and design optimization methods, Shoups research has focused on the use of spreadsheet modules to augment the design process in the analysis and synthesis of machine elements. The author or co-author of more than 15 textbooks and more than 140 technical articles, Shoup was also editor-in-chief of the foremost international mechanism design journal, Mechanism and Machine Theory, for more than 25 years. In addition to his tenure as 125th president of ASME in 2006-2007, Shoup, an ASME Fellow, has held a number of leadership posi tions within ASME, including member of the Board of Governors from 2001 to 2004, chair of the ASME Foundation from 2009 to 2011, senior leadership trainer for ASMEs VOLT (Volunteer Orientation and Leadership Training) Academy from 2012 to 2014, senior vice president for Education from 1998 to 2000, and chair of the Design Engineering Division from 1987 to 1988. He received ASMEs Centennial Medal in 1980, the Societys Gustus L. Larson Memorial Award in 1981, and a Distinguished Service Award from the ASME Council on Education in 1988. Webb MarnerMarner, an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is being honored for his significant contributions to the mechanical engineering profession through research in enhanced heat transfer, gas-side fouling and process engineering outstanding teaching and student mentoring and extensive, exemplary professional service.Marner, an ASME Fellow, is a renowned engineer, educator and researcher who has established an international reputation due to his contributions to the mechanical engineering field in general, and to the area of thermal science and engineering in particular. During his more than 50-year career, he worked as a quality control engineer at Sarkes Tarzian Inc., a faculty member at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and a member of the technical staff at Heat Transfer Research Inc., before joining the California Institute of Technologys Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in 1980. In 1995, Marner became manager of JPLs Measurement, Test and Engineering Support Section, which was in charge of supporting the environmental testing of such spacecraft as Cassini, Mars Pathfinder and the Mars Rover. Although he officially retired from JPL in 2006, he continued to work there as an interim employee until 2013. Since 1980, he has also lectured at several universities in Southern California, including UCLA, where he has taught since 1991.A member of the ASME Bo ard of Governors from 1998 to 2001, Marner has also served ASME in a number of capacities, including ASME secretary and treasurer, chair of the Heat Transfer Division, chair of the former ASME Region IX, member of the Committee on Finance and Investment, and faculty advisor to the ASME Student Section at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He is currently a Pension Plan trustee and associate editor of the Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Applications. He has been the recipient of numerous Society awards, including the ASME Dedicated Service Award, the Edwin F. Church Medal and the ASME 50 Year Service Award.
